Sketchbook

Students will learn and practice the art of bookbinding through creating personal sketchbooks.  The sketchbooks will be used to learn about contemporary and historical artists, and to practice drawing and coloring techniques.  For their covers, students will experiment with string painting.

Rubric – Sketchbook

  • VA:Cr2.1.6 – Demonstrate openness in trying new ideas, materials, methods, and approaches in making works of art and design.
  • VA:Re7.1.6 – Identify and interpret works of art or design that reveal how people live around the world and what they value.
  • VA:Cn10.1.6 – Generate a collection of ideas reflecting current interests and concerns that could be investigated in art-making.

Color Wheel Art Project

Students will learn about the Color Wheel, which is the foundation of color mixing and color theory.  Students will create an artwork where they will practice and learn how to draw realistically.  Students will also practice and experiment in color mixing with tempera paint.  Students will learn how to care for and properly clean up drawing and painting materials.

Essential Questions: How do artists learn from trial and error? How do artists care for & maintain materials, tools, & equipment?

Silhouette Paintings

Students will learn about tints, shades and analogous color schemes.  Students will learn about various artists who create silhouettes in their artwork.  Students will then create a painting of a silhouette using an analogous color scheme in their background.  Students will add their own creativity by choosing their subject matter.

Essential Question: How does knowing the contexts histories, & traditions of art forms help us create works of art & design? Why do artists follow or break from established traditions?
