Spelling Stars Shine in District 89’s Exciting Bee
On January 31, middle school students across the district showcased their spelling skills in an intense and exciting Spelling Bee competition. Before the event began, Dr. Hassan encouraged all participants, wishing them good luck and reminding them that they were all winners in her eyes.
Ms. Anderlick opened the event by announcing the rules and guidelines, ensuring all contestants understood the competition process. Ms. Bolden served as the pronouncer, delivering each word with precision. The panel of judges—Ms. Sykes, Ms. Jackson, Ms. Modugno, and Ms. Watkins—carefully evaluated the participants’ responses. At the same time, a second team of judges, Ms. Frasier and Mr. Yatvin, provided definitions, sentences, and clarifications as needed.
The competition progressed through 13 thrilling rounds, with each contestant demonstrating remarkable focus and determination. As the rounds progressed, the field narrowed until only three talented spellers remained. After a hard-fought battle, the top three winners emerged:
1st Place: Meraly R. (Stevenson)
2nd Place: Zakirah R. (Washington Dual Language Academy)
3rd Place: Ruby R. (Washington Dual Language Academy)
With the winning word “In•dis•tin•guish•a•ble,” Meraly claimed the championship title and will now advance to the West 40 Cook Spelling Bee, where she will represent District 89 on the next level of competition.
After all the hard work and excitement, students celebrated their achievements with a well-deserved pizza lunch, enjoying the fellowship and spirit of friendly competition.
Congratulations to all participants for their hard work and perseverance! The competition highlighted their spelling abilities, confidence, and dedication. Thanks to the organizers, judges, and families who supported the students throughout this exciting event.
